Main activities:

  • To study methods and agents for disinfection and sterilization
  • To prepare disinfection schemes for sites with epidemiological significance
  • To assist MoH in development of ordinances, guidance materials, and medical standards concerning HAI, disinfection, sterilization and pest-control activity
  • To participate in MoH commissions of experts and working groups
  • To evaluate antimicrobial effectiveness of disinfectants and medical devices under laboratory and practical conditions
  • To conducts annually training for students, biologists, medical doctors and laboratory specialists as part of their postgraduate courses and as part of the educational courses for medical specialties in Microbiology, Virology and Epidemiology and other specialties. The specialists conduct trainings for graduates and doctoral students.
  • To assist to Regional Health Inspectorates (RHIs) and all other healthcare facilities, citizens and pest-control operators in the country;

Disinfectants and antiseptics are tested in the laboratory according to the following standard methods:

EN 1040 Chemical disinfectants and antiseptics - Quantitative suspension test for the evaluation of basic bactericidal activity of chemical disinfectants and antiseptics - Test method and requirements (phase 1);

EN 1275 Chemical disinfectants and antiseptics - Quantitative suspension test for the evaluation of basic fungicidal or basic yeasticidal activity of chemical disinfectants and antiseptics - Test method and requirements (phase 1);

EN 14561 Chemical disinfectants and antiseptics - Quantitative carrier test for the evaluation of bactericidal activity for instruments used in the medical area - Test method and requirements (phase 2, step 2);

EN 14562 Chemical disinfectants and antiseptics - Quantitative carrier test for the evaluation of fungicidal or yeasticidal activity for instruments used in the medical area - Test method and requirements (phase 2, step 2);

EN 1276 Chemical disinfectants and antiseptics. Quantitative suspension test for the evaluation of bactericidal activity of chemical disinfectants and antiseptics used in food, industrial, domestic and institutional areas. Test method and requirements (phase 2, step 1);

EN 1650 Chemical disinfectants and antiseptics - Quantitative suspension test for the evaluation of fungicidal or yeasticidal activity of chemical disinfectants and antiseptics used in food, industrial, domestic and institutional areas - Test method and requirements (phase 2, step 1);

EN 13727 Chemical disinfectants and antiseptics. Quantitative suspension test for the evaluation of bactericidal activity in the medical area. Test method and requirements (phase 2, step 1);

EN 13624 Chemical disinfectants and antiseptics - Quantitative suspension test for the evaluation of fungicidal or yeasticidal activity in the medical area - Test method and requirements (phase 2, step 1);

EN 13697 Chemical disinfectants and antiseptics - Quantitative non-porous surface test for the evaluation of bactericidal and yeasticidal and/or fungicidal activity of chemical disinfectants used in food, industrial, domestic and institutional areas without mechanical action - Test method and requirements without mechanical action (phase 2, step 2);

EN 1500 Chemical disinfectants and antiseptics - Hygienic handrub - Test method and requirements (pase 2/step 2);

EN 1499 Chemical disinfectants and antiseptics - Hygienic handwash - Test method and requirements (phase 2/step 2);

EN 12791 Chemical disinfectants and antiseptics - Surgical hand disinfection - Test method and requirements (phase 2, step 2).

Methods EN 1040; EN 1275 and EN 13697 are included in the scope of accreditation in accordance with the requirements of EN ISO 17025.
