The main aspects of the department’s activity:

  • scientific and research activities aiming to achieve effective national communicable disease (CD) surveillance and control, incl. immunoprophylaxis and implementation of disinfection, sterilization and vector control practices;
  • participation in the preparation ofdisease prevention programs, regulations and guidance documents of Ministry of Health (MoH)
  • provision of expert advice and conduction of postgraduate courses for medical specialists from Regional Health Inspectorates (RHIs);
  • media dissemination of health knowledge to public.

The activity of the laboratory is related to:

  • Development of analytical methods for qualitative and quantitative control of biocides;
  • Determination of the physico-chemical characteristics of disinfectants;
  • Quantification of the included active substances (AB) in disinfectants and prepared working solutions;
  • Tracking the stability of AB over time;
  • Disinfection control through express and quantitative chemical methods;
  • Compilation of disinfection regimes;
  • Carrying out quantitative tests of disinfectants, according to the requirements of the BDS/EN/ISO17025 standard;
  • Production of chemical indicators for daily control of sterilization at 121°C, 134°C and 165°C with a certified quality management system BDS/EN/ISO9001;
  • Consultations for interested persons on disinfection and sterilization;
  • Conducting thematic courses for postgraduate studies and individual training of disinfection and sterilization specialists.

2. The role of cave-dwelling bat species in Bulgaria as vectors and reservoirs of European bat lyssaviruses.  Funded by Bulgarian Fund for scientific investigations /№ КП-06-Н31/14 from 11.12.2019

3. Biological and molecular genetic studies on the insecticide resistance of native and invasive mosquito species. Funded by Bulgarian Fund for scientific investigations/ № КП-06-Н41/5 from 30.11.2020.

Main activities:

  • To study methods and agents for disinfection and sterilization
  • To prepare disinfection schemes for sites with epidemiological significance
  • To assist MoH in development of ordinances, guidance materials, and medical standards concerning HAI, disinfection, sterilization and pest-control activity
  • To participate in MoH commissions of experts and working groups
  • To evaluate antimicrobial effectiveness of disinfectants and medical devices under laboratory and practical conditions
  • To conducts annually training for students, biologists, medical doctors and laboratory specialists as part of their postgraduate courses and as part of the educational courses for medical specialties in Microbiology, Virology and Epidemiology and other specialties. The specialists conduct trainings for graduates and doctoral students.
  • To assist to Regional Health Inspectorates (RHIs) and all other healthcare facilities, citizens and pest-control operators in the country;

EN 1499 Chemical disinfectants and antiseptics - Hygienic handwash - Test method and requirements (phase 2/step 2);

EN 12791 Chemical disinfectants and antiseptics - Surgical hand disinfection - Test method and requirements (phase 2, step 2).

Methods EN 1040; EN 1275 and EN 13697 are included in the scope of accreditation in accordance with the requirements of EN ISO 17025.

To assist and advise public health specialists from RHIs and medical establishments as well as pest control personnel;

To provide specialised consultation on chemical and microbiological control of biocides, and vector and rodent control methods and practices;

To develop ordinances, guidance materials, and medical standards concerning HAI and CD prevention and control;

To participate in MoH commissions of experts and working groups;

To prepare public information about vector-borne diseases;

To produce chemical indicators for sterilization control;

To conduct postgraduated courses and individual education plans for specialists in DDD field;

To conduct legal capacity course for DDD management according to Ordinance No1 from 05.01.2018

The Epidemiology and Surveillance of Communicable Diseases Unit addresses scientific advices and assists Bulgarian Ministry of Health in organization of preventive and control activities in the field of CD surveillance. Units’ specialists collaborate with regional epidemiologists and health officers during outbreak investigation and epidemic management. The main activities of the experts:

  • To develop studies on problems of CD surveillance, control and prevention; to publish and disseminate studies results to professionals and public;
  • To organise and conduct courses and individual postgraduate education for public health specialists from Regional Health Inspectorates (RHIs) and health facilities on different topics concerning epidemiology, surveillance, prevention and control of communicable diseases; to teach PhD students and to prepare research fellows in the field of epidemiology;
  • To collect, collate and analyse national epidemiological data; to assess epidemic situation and to provide evaluation of immunoprophylaxis; to prepare current and annual CD analyses, assessments and forecasts; to prepare and upload CD bulletins on a weekly basis on the website of NCIPD;
  • To perform tasks derived from a designated role of NCIPD as a National Coordinating Competent Body for communication with European Centre for Diseases prevention and Control (ECDC) on technical and scientific issues referring to public health surveillance, training and scientific expertise;
  • To participate in international specific dedicated information systems, committees, and working groups regarding CD surveillance aspects;
  • To assist MoH and RHIs in their daily work on implementation of National Immunisation schedule and to carry out vaccines promotion in public in order to foster achieving of high immunisation coverage at district level;
  • To interact with MoH and RHIs for adverse events following immunisation (AEFI) surveillance establishment; to provide expert advice to public health specialists on AEFI investigations;
  • To provide information and methodological support to RHIs for carrying out border health control focused on preventing importation of CDs and health events, concerning public health threats;
  • To collaborate with MoH on risk evaluation and to assist in organisation of control measures during epidemic outbreaks and public health emergencies;
  • To provide information in the field of communicable diseases’ prevention via NCIPD website.
