Department History:

In 1921 - 1925, the Bacteriological Department was created and was separated as an independent structural unit in the composition of foundations in 1897 Bacteriological Institute. Subsequently, over the years, this unit underwent development and established itself as the main diagnostic center in the country.

From 1992 to 2019, the "Microbiology" department at the National Academy of Medical Sciences was headed by Professor Dr. Todor Kantarjiev, MD, who is also the National Consultant in Microbiology of MOH.Recently, the "Microbiology" department is headed by Assoc. Prof. Viktoria Levterova, MD.The department is made up of 7 laboratories, which since 2001 have the status of National Reference Laboratories (NRL). They are directly involved in the reference-diagnostic activity of the centers and is accredited according to the standard BDS EN ISO/IEC 17025 in relation to microbiological diagnostics .

Since 2002, all NRLs in the "Microbiology" department participate in the international quality control system and are certified by  INSTAND, Düsseldorf, Germany .

Since 2003, the Department of Microbiology together with Bulgarian Association of Microbiologists participate in conducting an external laboratory quality control of microbiological research in the laboratories of the health network in the country. The scientific staff of the department actively participates in the development of scientific topics of practical significance.

The Department of Microbiology has highly qualified and excellently prepared teachers on the problems of bacterial and fungal infections and their laboratory diagnostics. It also has a good material base - laboratories equipped with modern equipment and a classroom.

Educational and teaching activity is aimed at two directions - postgraduate training of specialists from the health network and student training. The postgraduate training program offers all the necessary specialized theoretical, practical and individual courses intended for doctors, biologists and other specialists from and outside the MH system.
